Lincoln leads the pack with 12 Oscar nominations, controversial Django Unchained nabs five

With Emma Stone at his side, Host Seth McFarlane announced the nominees for the 85th annual Academy Awards this morning.

Lincoln, the biopic about America’s 16th president picked up the most nominations with a total of 12, including “Best Picture”, “Best Director” (Steven Spielberg) and “Best Actor” (Daniel Day Lewis). Life of Pi followed closely behind with 11 nominations, including “Best Picture” and “Best Visual Effects”.

This year’s nominees include the oldest and youngest nominees ever competing for the “Best Actress” award with Amour‘s Emanuelle Riva, 85, and Quvenzhane Wallis,9, of Beasts of the Southern Wild. In addition to Best Actress, Beasts of the Southern Wild  is nominated for three more awards.

Django Unchained, the controversial movie about a revenge seeking slave which hit theaters on Christmas 2012, nabbed a total of five nominations for “Best Picture”, “Best Original Screenplay”, “Best Supporting Actor” (Christopher Waltz), “Best Cinematography”, and “Best Sound Editing”.

The awards will be hosted by Seth McFarlane, who is also up for “Best Music (Original Song)” for his work on the film Ted. The 85th annual Academy Awards airs February 24.
