Spring Preview: 5 shows premiering in the next 5 weeks

28 Feb

It’s weird enough that networks no longer give a show a full season to prove they can bring in ratings, and instead premiere new shows in January to replace old shows mid-season, but programming that starts in March? That’s just awkward.

If the new shows in September didn’t live up to the hype, and their January replacements didn’t entice you either here are a few new (and returning) shows for you to try out this Spring.

RedWidowRed Widow Sundays at 10pm on ABC
Premieres March 3

666 Park Avenue didn’t cut it, and now that award season is over it’s time for the replacement show – Red Widow. Radha Mitchell (Phone Booth, The Crazies) plays Marta, a California housewife whose husband has just died, causing her to immerse herself in the Russian mob lifestyle she spent an entire lifetime running away from.

Fashion Star Fridays at 8pm on NBC

Singer turned designer Jessica Simpson says Season 2 will be bigger, better and “sexy as heck”. Simpson, Nicole Richie and John Varvatos return as mentors while new Host Louise Roe steps in for Elle MacPherson. New fashion bidder Express also joins the competition and competitors include someone who once worked for Carolina Herrara!

Grimm Fridays at 9pm on NBC
Premieres March 8

Is this show based off of fairy tales or soap operas? The second half of the second season (take a moment to process that) picks up when Nick Grimm goes head to head with his boss Renard after Renard’s mutual attraction to Nick’s girlfriend Juliette approaches dangerous levels.

Mad for Mod

27 Feb

Ever wish you were born circa 1945? Not so that you could see the Beatles live, or even witness Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, but so that you’d be in your late teens/early twenties when Mod was in style? Well I have, and it looks like I’m getting my wish!

Mod is back in a big way, and thanks to the special two-hour premiere of Mad Men’s fifth season on April 7, a few companies are introducing Mad Men inspired collections. Whether you prefer shimmery makeup or mini skirts pick up an  item from one of these two brands to “mod”ify your current wardrobe.

Sheer, shimmery pastels for lips and nails plus a cheek color so sheer it looks shockingly nude. Estee Lauder’s Mad Men Collection offers a limited edition lipstick, blush and nail lacquer reminiscent of the popular 1960s subculture.

In stores today, the third installment of Banana Republic Mad Men focuses on the lively graphics and form flattering silhouettes of the 60s style. The 52 piece limited edition collection is designed by Mad Men costume designer Jamie Bryant and features pieces for women and men, including geometric silk scarves, gingham pants and straw fedoras.

In India, the films are not just looked upon just as entertainment. They’re a way of life.

PMK ‘s “King Bey” Sneakers

26 Feb

At some point this year I’m sure we’re going to get tired of talking about Beyonce – but Bey isn’t giving us a reason to just yet. First she won the Super Bowl, then she directed her own documentary, announced a World Tour, and now her own shoe.

Custom footwear design house Perfectly Made Kicks (PMK) took one of Bey’s favorite shoe styles – the Isabel Marant sneaker wedge – and incorporated the pop star’s favorite exotic animal skins into the new design. The “King Bey” includes stingray, ostrich, calf hair, crocodile and anaconda skins.

Wedge sneakers are definitely a short term fad, and only a select amount of people can actually get away with them. Given the star power Mrs. Carter has had thus far this year these shoes have a good chance of becoming an “it” item

Oscars 2013: 5 looks worth talking about

25 Feb

At the 85th annual Academy Awards, m ost actresses seemed to stick to the “keep it simple” approach last night. We saw a see of white gowns with minimal color complemented by simple, if done at all, hair and makeup. Though there weren’t as many WOW moments as we got at this year’s Grammys, here are the few ladies worth noticing.

Jane Fonda in Atelier Versace

I can’t recall what was in those Jane Fonda workout tapes but it’s clear that routine gives long-lasting results!! As one of the (very) few ladies to embrace color last night Fonda showed us she’s still got it in an elegant canary yellow Versace gown.

Charlize Theron in Dior Haute Couture

South African beauty Charlize Theron took the ‘less is more’ approach with less color, less detail and less hair – and it worked in her favor! A peplum top and not too revealing cleavage slit were all the excitement this Dior Haute Couture gown needed.

Kerry Washington in Miu Miu

Django Unchained’s lead actress has been on fire with the creativity in her wardrobe lately and last night was no exception. Kerry Washington‘s nude bustier with Swarovski crystals was a minimalist accent to the floor-length coral Miu Miu gown. A little more effort in the hair would’ve been appreciated.

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture

The Silver Linings Playbook star took home two awards last night – Best Actress and Best Dressed!! Jennifer Lawrence‘s voluminous skirt on this Dior Haute Couture gown makes so much of a statement that minimal accessories were all she needed.

Zoe Saldana in Alexis Mabille

As elegant as all of the ladies were last night, they were also very safe. Zoe Saldana put a little more thought into her look with an Alexis Mabille gown with not one but THREE unique accents – a tricolor bottom (awesome!), a floral accented top (nice) and a random wide belt (why?!). She should’ve went with different shoes but that hair? Flawless!
