Buy of the month: July 2013

PURE_NAIL_BAR

After a two month shopping hiatus I bought quite a few things  this month, but of all the  July goodies my favorite has to be nail polish from PURE Nail Lacquer. I’m normally an Essie girl – but I don’t mind trying hues from different brands – especially if they’re a bit cheaper at $5 a bottle!PURE is a new nail polish brand I found out about when a friend invited me to their pop-up shop. The Brooklyn based line currently carries a variety of hues  including sheers, nudes and neons. I decided to venture out of standard muted colors for something more fun –  Honesty (pink) and Sunny Disposition (yellow).

PURE Nail Lacquers in Sunny Disposition and Honesty

I found the pink to be really fun, and not too out of character, as I love to wear pink. The yellow takes a bit more getting used to, and was more difficult to apply. I found myself using three coats, as opposed to my usual two coats, since the color came on a little streaky.

What makes PURE polishes different from the rest? According to creator Danielle Lewis the lacquers are chip resistant and free from harsh chemicals formaldehyde, toluene and DBT.  Lewis credits the PURE base coat  with helping the polish stay on for as long as seven days. I must admit that she’s onto something with that base coat –  when I used her base coat the polish stayed seven days until I wiped it off but when I used my own base coat with her polish I wasn’t so lucky.  No large smudges but I did notice small chips at the tip of the nail in the first 2 days. I will say that the polish does dry incredibly fast!

Normally I stick to French mani-pedis, or the occasional pastel but since one of my beauty-lutions this year was to get more creative with my nails, I’m happy about this purchase! I’m looking forward to practicing more nail art ideas using these two colors.

SHOULD Lindsay Lohan guest host ‘Chelsea Lately’?

30 Jul

Every now and then Chelsea Lately host Chelsea Handler has to take a break, but her show MUST go on. E!’s solution? Guest hosts.

Usually the guest host is one of the regular members of her nightly roundtable or at the very least a fellow comedian or E! personality, though the station has thrown in the occasional superstar such as Kevin Hart or Dave Grohl. Despite the many surprise guest hosts Chelsea Lately has had there’s one celebrity I NEVER thought I’d see on her show: Lindsay Lohan.

Yes, that Lindsay Lohan. The redheaded freckled face star of Mean Girls who spiraled out of control in adulthood and become the constant butt of Chelsea’s jokes. As one of the main personalities the show makes fun of, how will this work?

Chelsea Lately has a specific format: Chelsea Handler opens with a joke, followed by the opening credits and then a roundtable discussion about pop culture with three comedians before interviewing a celebrity guest. Many of the topics they discuss include “stupid news”, celebrity gossip and my personal favorite – stupid celebrity gossip. When a celebrity says or does something silly in the media the comedians take turns attacking not only this celebrity’s actions but their character, personality, family life, and anything else they can make a joke of.  Given Lindsay’s problems with drugs and alcohol she’s a constant topic on this show. They’ve made fun of her parents, her looks, her mom’s looks, her addictions, and even her short-lived alleged relationship with British boy band The Wanted. If she’s done it, they’ve ridiculed her for it. How comfortable can she be hosting a panel where all they usually do is make fun of her?

This episode is sure to be interesting. As many troubles as Lindsay has, she’s never been particularly sensitive about the public’s perception of her, so she may be able to handle this. I’m hoping she’ll open with a self-deprecating joke and be able to make us laugh at her fellow train-wreck celebs without too many awkward moments. She’s a funny and talented girl – I hope those qualities come through while she’s on the show.

Lindsay Lohan’s episode of Chelsea Lately airs next Monday August 5 at 11pm on E! – I’ll be watching and rooting for her, will you?

Lady Gaga releases artwork for new single ‘Applause’

29 Jul

We haven’t heard from Lady Gaga in a while, but the singer seems to have been working hard on some new material.  Over the weekend Gaga teased her new single “Applause” by releasing new artwork via her Twitter account:

“Applause”, the first single from the upcoming album ARTPOP  will be released on August 19, followed by Gaga’s live performance debut of the single on Aug 25 at the MTV VMAs. Though ARTPOP will not be released until November 11, the album will be available for preorder on August 19.

When an artist takes some time away from the spotlight it sometimes means they’ve had lots of time to work on and perfect new material, and other times it means they’ve just lost it. Gaga’s always been one to reinvent herself and push the envelope, but her last project seemed like she’d been running out of ideas.  Here Gaga looks more regular –  no out of this world wigs, just long brunette locks. Sure she’s naked except for the cooky glasses and surrounded by the insides of a computer system but this is tame compared to Gaga we’re used to. Could she be working on shedding her kooky image like Nicki Minaj has been doing? Gaga’s always put forth a solid body of work so let’s hope that the time away from the spotlight and seemingly new image haven’t taken away from her creativity as an artist.
