Best thing I bought this month: August 2013

29 Aug

August was a great month for me! I made an appearance on Glamour.com, discovered a new lip color from the Marc Jacobs Beauty line, and even got Beyonce tickets for December (Go Giiiiirl!)! As happy as I am about all those accomplishments,  the highlight of my month  was this Pleated Faux Leather Skirt in “Holiday Crush” by French Connection I found at Bloomingdales.

Pleated Faux Leather Skirt French Connection $148

Pleated Faux Leather Skirt
French Connection $148

I love this skirt because it’s what I like to call a now-and-later piece: there are elements of the skirt that apply to both summer (now) and fall (later). It’s mid-thigh length and salmon-y color exude summer style while the faux leather is more appropriate for fall. I also love how the feminine pleats hide any potential trouble spots!

So how does one take this piece from now to later? While it’s still warm out, I’ll pair it with light colors, sandals, and my 2013 summer staple – crop tops. Once it gets a bit colder I’ll offset the pinkish pigment with autumn hues such as black or olive green, and pair with tights, booties and jackets to stay warm.

My favorite thing about this purchase? It retails for $148 but due to end of season sales and customer loyalty discounts I only paid $31 for it! Shopping lesson here – search sales racks for end of season items that carry over to the next season. You’ll get something that stays in style for a while without spending major bucks.

How would YOU style this piece?

6 beauty moments from the 2013 VMAs worth talking about

26 Aug

Okay, it’s a music award show, so makes sense most of the attention is turned on  the performances, but how about some of these beauty moments from the 2013 VMAs?

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus

They say your 20s are for experimentation and making mistakes – well Miley Cyrus made three last night – her performance, this ugly ensemble, and that hair. Is she channeling Gwen Stefani in the ’90s? It’s not working. Find another muse.

2013 MTV Video Music Awards - Arrivals

Taylor Swift actually took a beauty risk last night. We’re used to her natural curls, or when she wants to look grown up, straightened hair with a bang. Last night the songstress tried a more sophisticated updo but clung to her trademark red lip. Glad she ventured out because it worked for her!

GagaVMAperformanceThe first change we noticed after Lady Gaga‘s several month hiatus from the spotlight was her relatively normal appearance when debuting her video on Good Morning America one week ago. Last night she started her “Applause” performance fully covered and ended up stripped down to just shells and a string bikini. Why was this so awesome? Gaga has noticeably put on weight since her last public performance and she STILL looks good. She was never shy about stripping down when she was really skinny, and still isn’t at her new average weight. It’s healthy for women, especially MTV’s high school target audience, to see her at this weight and not being ashamed of it.

SelenaGomezVMAsSelena Gomez wore Atelier Versace when accepting her first moonman for “Best Pop Video” and the starlet nailed her look. Whether or not you like the dress, you must admit the deep red lip and nails are the perfect compliment to this dress, not to mention her understated eyes and sleek blowout.

PaulaPattonVMAsPaula Patton had a minor beauty mishap last night. The actress always looks good but one can’t help but notice how disheveled her hair looks. We could blame it on a limo romp, but husband Robin Thicke looked perfect. Is everything alright Paula?

KatyPerrygrillVMA

Katy Perry looked GREAT last night with barely there makeup and a sleek long ponytail to let her leopard print dress shine. Then we noticed her grill. Is this a thing again? Please say no!!

What do you think of these looks? Were there any other looks worth noticing?

Best (and worst) parts of the 2013 MTV VMAs

26 Aug

The VMA’s last night were all over the place – Taylor Swift lost her class, calling out the ex who inspired “Best Female Video” winning single “Trouble”,  Rihanna couldn’t contain her unimpressed facial expressions ESPECIALLY watching Miley Cyrus and later Drake, and One Direction took home “Song of the Summer” for a single no one seemed to be listening to. What else did you miss? Read on for the highs and lows of this year’s award show.

GagaVMAperformanceLady Gaga kicked off the show with her first ever live performance of “Applause”. Forget mid-show costume changes, Gaga changed looks FOUR TIMES during this single performance, starting in a habit a la Nicki Minaj and ending in a string bikini bottom with just shells covering her top half.

NSYNCatVMAsJustin Timberlake, who nabbed a total of four of the six awards he was up for, no doubt had the best performance of the night.  JT performed a medley of his biggest hits opening with his current single  “Take Back the Night” and a cast of well-dressed male and female dancers.  Halfway through the performance his N*SYNC bandmates joined him for a brief snippet of “Girlfriend” and “Bye, Bye, Bye” before letting Justin finish his solo performance with “Mirrors”.

2013 MTV Video Music Awards - ShowMacklemore & Ryan Lewis gave a lackluster performance of “Same Love” with Mary Dalton. Jennifer Hudson showed up in what looked like a last minute decision to have a sing-off with Mary Dalton, who just seemed exhausted the whole time. Despite their forgettable performance, the hip-hop duo took home three awards, taking “Best Cinematography” , beating Beyonce for “Best Video with a Social Message” and Drake, ASAP, J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar for “Best Hip-Hop Video”.

Even though she didn’t nab any moonmen, Miley Cyrus undoubtedly had the most memorable performance of the night. The “We Can’t Stop” singer came out in a bear costume and performed her single surrounded by women dancing in bear costumes as Miley gyrated and touched herself on stage. Wait – it gets better. She then stripped down to a bra and panties and was joined by Robin Thicke as the two performed “Blurred Lines” and she continued to gyrate – on him. Don’t worry, Paula Patton was probably too distracted to notice. There’s more. 2 Chainz came out, followed by Kendrick Lamar, with dancers who actually performed choreography but were overshadowed by Miley’s adolescent cries for attention.

TLCatVMAsWhat was REALLY the highlight of the evening? All the promos for upcoming projects. Eminem has a new album, Marshal Mathers LP 2, coming out November 5, with a single “Berzerk” out tomorrow. There’s still no release date for VH1’s TLC biopic Crazy Sexy Cool, but they did debut a new promo with more details than the last teaser. Judging by the new promo, this made for TV movie uses audio from the group’s Behind the Music special.  The upcoming project surprise of the night came from Lady Gaga. While still on the red carpet, Gaga told MTV Host Sway that Rapper 2 Short would be featured on her upcoming album. What?!

WhereBrooklynAt

The lowest point of the night? MTV has made a HUGE fuss about bringing the show back to New York and hosting it for the first time ever in the borough of Brooklyn. So where were the Brooklyn artists? All the promos included the Beastie Boys’ “No Sleep ’til Brooklyn” and throughout the show they kept reminding us that they were in the thoroughest borough, but not one Brooklyn artist performed.  Lil’ Kim presented the “Best Hip-Hop Video” award but there was no performance from Brooklyn’s golden child Jay Z, no tribute to Biggie Smalls, or even Brooklyn-born songstress/video visionary Aaliyah, whose passed away 12 years ago yesterday.  What gives?

MTV VMAs 2013 were held last night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. For a complete list of winners visit mtv.com.
