First photo of Quvenzhane Wallis as ‘Annie’

There have been LOTS of rumors about who’s being cast in the Annie remake Jay Z and the Pinkett-Smith’s are working on. Quvenzhane Wallis was confirmed to play the lead character earlier this year and it looks like the first photo from the set has been leaked!

Shadow and Act posted this photo to their blog  which shows the young actress riding a Citibike through the streets of Harlem.  Quvenzhane is seen sporting a longer, dark brown version of the famous unruly curly red hair that made the original Annie so “undesirable”.

Thought it looks like Overbrook Entertainment decided to stick to the curly-haired orphan aspects of the original story, according to Shadow and Act, several updates have been made to the original script. For starters Annie’s is now  “Isabella” who  desires a “no limit credit-card with shopping sprees galore”.  Played by Jamie Foxx, “Benjamin Stacks” will be the modern version of Daddy Warbucks.

Taking a few creative liberties seems like the best options for this remake, since the original script was set during the Great Depression and times sure have changed! Original Annie longed for a two-parent home – which isn’t so ‘normal’ or desirable in 2013, Finding a 10 year-old who has never been to the movies, even if they’ve never had a home is next to impossible – today’s pre-teens want cell phones. Remaking the film would have to include these and a number of other updates to stay relevant to the times.  Somehow the only thing that seems to be the same is an orphans desire for money and a child’s curly hair deeming them “undesirable”  This remake should be interesting to say the least.

The Annie remake is due in theaters on December 25, 2014 – will you be watching?
