Buy of the month: July 2013

31 Jul

PURE_NAIL_BAR

After a two month shopping hiatus I bought quite a few things  this month, but of all the  July goodies my favorite has to be nail polish from PURE Nail Lacquer. I’m normally an Essie girl – but I don’t mind trying hues from different brands – especially if they’re a bit cheaper at $5 a bottle!PURE is a new nail polish brand I found out about when a friend invited me to their pop-up shop. The Brooklyn based line currently carries a variety of hues  including sheers, nudes and neons. I decided to venture out of standard muted colors for something more fun –  Honesty (pink) and Sunny Disposition (yellow).

I found the pink to be really fun, and not too out of character, as I love to wear pink. The yellow takes a bit more getting used to, and was more difficult to apply. I found myself using three coats, as opposed to my usual two coats, since the color came on a little streaky.

What makes PURE polishes different from the rest? According to creator Danielle Lewis the lacquers are chip resistant and free from harsh chemicals formaldehyde, toluene and DBT.  Lewis credits the PURE base coat  with helping the polish stay on for as long as seven days. I must admit that she’s onto something with that base coat –  when I used her base coat the polish stayed seven days until I wiped it off but when I used my own base coat with her polish I wasn’t so lucky.  No large smudges but I did notice small chips at the tip of the nail in the first 2 days. I will say that the polish does dry incredibly fast!

Normally I stick to French mani-pedis, or the occasional pastel but since one of my beauty-lutions this year was to get more creative with my nails, I’m happy about this purchase! I’m looking forward to practicing more nail art ideas using these two colors.

Release your inner child and doodle with your choice of Chalk Pen on a base of black matte polish for a cute classroom look. First apply two layers of the  Chalkboard Paint polish and allow to thoroughly dry. Then, choose one of the four chalk pens and prepare to doodle! Made a mistake? Just wipe away the design with water if you need to change. Once you’re ready to keep the design, seal it in with a Mattnificent top coat.

Ciate’s  Limited Edition Chalkboard Manicure set comes with a Mattnificent Matte Top Coat, Chalkboard Paint Pot, and four chalk pens in Teachers Pet (blue), Satchel (white), Jump Rope (pink), and Recess (yellow).

Fiesta’s Finds: Essie ‘Sleek sticks’ Winter 2013 collection

10 Jan

I’ve never been big on nail art, if you don’t do it right it can look very childish and tacky, but I must admit that recently I’m becoming more intrigued this beauty phenomenon.

Besides the high risk of looking cheap? It’s difficult. I’m constantly amazed at women who manage to create well crafted designs on all ten fingers. How do they do it?

Insert a simple solution – Sleek sticks courtesy of Essie. Though they’re not the first to create nail stickers in pretty designs, this is the first time I’ve actually considered using stickers instead of an actual polish.

The application process is simple: Place stickers on clean nails,  smooth out air bubbles then file away the excess paper and voila! You’ve got a cool mani that lasts about 10 days.

All the designs look great, but I can’t wait to try “love to love you” and “over the moon”.

Essie Launches Breast Cancer Awareness Collection

1 Oct

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Essie has launched a new line of four pink lacquers called “We’re in it together”.

Previously, Essie has only come up with one polish for breast cancer awareness. In addition to creating their 2012 Breast Cancer Awareness Collection, Essie has also made a charitable contribution to Living Beyond Breast Cancer.

Check out the entire line below. Try the sheer pink with a french manicure. The others work great alone or with a darker color for a trendy contrast.
