Honey Help Me! Lorde goes Goth

3 Dec

A lot of celebs are fortunate enough to have stylists that make sure they’re always well dressed. Unfortunately, celebs also have too many yes-men – people who are afraid to tell them they’re making a bad decision.

Between stylist and yes-men sometimes Hollywood’s finest step out in looks that stun us. Other times they step out in looks that just scream, “Honey, Help Me!”

I get it, Lorde is only 17 and goth is a pretty normal phase to be in at her age but umm, NO.

Lorde-ARIA-Awards-Sydney

The “Royals” singer donned a floor length elbow-sleeved gown to the ARIA Awards in Sydney, Australia this past Sunday and I just know one day she’ll add this to her list of teenage regrets. While the shape of the dress works well for her body, the color doesn’t seem to do anything for her pale skin. Against that basic black Lorde looks beyond pale – sickly almost! Those identical silver bracelets? They look like nametags on a body lying in the morgue. No ma’am.

Lorde had every opportunity to bring her look to life with her hair and makeup but she missed it. Though an on-trend plum pout and side-parted hair would normally be cute, it just adds to her drabby, depressing look.

What could Lorde have done to look more alive? Keep the black if need be, but swap out the dark lip for a true red. Instead of silver bracelets she could’ve tried a gold necklace. I know, gold chains go against everything she’s well known for but one won’t kill her! N last but not least  she should let those luscious locks loose!

Lorde’s career is just starting out and if she’s around for more than a few months she’ll have more red carpet opportunities to redeem herself. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that she’s invited to the Grammys and gets it together by then!

2013 American Music Awards: Red Carpet Highlights

25 Nov

Last night’s American Music Awards looks were pretty underwhelming. Black and white proved to be the shades of choice and the key to a successful look seemed to be covered up with cut outs. Here’s a round-up of the looks worth talking about:

AMAs2013-Katy-PerryKaty Perry this look is just – no. A black dress with white polka dots interrupted by red and pink flowers? This looks like something you wore to the 8th grade prom and are embarrassed about when someone posts it as a Throwback Thursday pic. To add insult to injury her black and white polka dot nails match the dress.

AMAs2013-Christina-AguileraChristina Aguilera is a vast improvement from the look she sported at last year’s AMAs. The Voice judge stunned in a long sleeved white dress with a plunging V-neck and sheer triangular cut outs on the side.

NellyNelly has GOT to hire a stylist so he can start looking like he belongs. Just because you’re not accepting an award doesn’t mean you don’t have to try. In sneaks, a long sleeved graphic tee and are those leather pants? Nelly more like he’s ready to run to Target than perform at an awards show.

AMAs2013-Ariana-GrandeAriana Grande was one of the few starlets to embrace color in a Dolce and Gabbana gown. She looked great but it’s clear she’s still learning about red carpet style – and how to do her hair like an adult. Cute, but hopefully she gets it right next time.

CA: 2013 American Music Awards Red Carpet - ArrivalsLeave it to Lady Gaga to make the most dramatic red carpet entrances ever. The “Applause” singer donned a Versace gown and rode onto the carpet on a man-made horse.

AMAs2013-RihannaIt seems like most people didn’t really care about their appearance last night but least invested shockingly goes to Rihanna. The “What Now” singer is known for pulling off bold red carpet looks but maybe she got tired of the attention? Not only did Rihanna skip the red carpet but when she eventually showed up to the awards, she a black bra top with a high waist brief attached a sheer overlay that touched the floor. Her hair? Undone. Rihanna came with her hair wrapped up as though she’d just left the salon and was waiting till she had somewhere important to be before exposing a new ‘do. In case you’re wondering yes – she did get on stage to perform and accept both her awards without combing out her hair.

AMAs2013-Miley-Cyrus8Miley Cyrus showed up her most shocking red carpet look of the year –  a white pantsuit. We’ve gotten so accustomed to seeing her wear something bold and controversial but the singer chose a more conservative look for her red carpet arrival. Don’t worry – by the time she was ready to perform she shed the suit in favor of her more usual attire – a revealing two piece tankini set that seemed to be cut by the same people who made Baywatch uniforms. At least the cat print set was kind of cute?

AMAs2013-Taylor-SwiftBig winner Taylor Swift continued her style evolution in a dress by Julian McDonald. The singer went super short gold Julian McDonald dress with a sheer cut out and strappy gold sandals. Her simple straightened hair was the perfect complement to this look.

AMAs2013-Naya-RiveraTaylor Swift may have won the most awards but Naya Rivera was the REAL winner on the red carpet.  Her long-sleeved, floor length turtleneck gown with a train covered every inch of her body except the large cut out in the center showing the right amount of cleavage. Her jewels, if you even noticed them, were a nice simple addition to the look.

5 Best Red Carpet Looks from the CMAs

7 Nov

Last night the 47th annual Country Music Awards aired on ABC and country music stars stepped out in their finest attire for the occasion. Which stars really rocked the red carpet? See below for my picks for the five best dressed of the evening.

47th Annual CMA Awards - Arrivals

I’m not sure why Pretty Little Liars’ Lucy Hale was invited to  but she sure did work this red carpet! A flowy gown with a clutch that matches the adornment on her neckline and simple jewelry was the perfect decision! Even her minimalist makeup look helps this look. I do wish her ankle strap shoes weren’t platforms – the extra height is just a tad out of place.

CMAs-2013-Hunter-HayesAs the only man on my list I’ll say the same thing about Hunter Hayes as I said about Nas at the Grammys“Please let him win this award so he can get on stage and show other male artists how to dress at an award show!”. The “Wanted” singer pulled off this perfectly tailored suit by matching his pocket square to his patterned shirt and sporting a blending bow tie. The slightly worn in look on his shoes is a nice contrast to the shine in this suit. Kudos to number four on my list!

CMAs-2013-Robin-RobertsNot even Beyonce can pull off a black pantsuit on a red carpet but somehow Good Morning America‘s Robin Roberts NAILED IT! The pant suit shows off her toned arms and silver embellishments on the belt and collar are a simple, classy touch that take a pantsuit from work appropriate to red carpet ready. Add standout matching shoes and a small bracelet and Robin is WORKING IT!

47th Annual CMA Awards - Arrivals

First runner up goes to American Idol alum Kellie Pickler who stepped out in a body hugging Georges Chakra mermaid gown. Her emerald earrings are a great pop of color to complement her black gown and almost platinum blonde hair and the minimalist makeup goes works well with the rest of her minimalist look. Get it Kellie!

47th Annual CMA Awards - Arrivals

In an sheer embellished, flesh-toned gown, mega-selling country star Carrie Underwood takes best dressed on my list! The American Idol didn’t skip one detail when putting together this look! The pattern on the dress covers up all the important places and a rose gold clutch blends seamlessly without distracting from her look. Can we take a second to talk about her makeup? Her face looks flawless with a pinkish lip and that sexy smoldering  eye. Add that tousled hair and no one is coming close to Carrie’s fierceness. Brava!

Agree with my picks? Think I made the wrong decision? Sound off in the comments section below!

Honey Help Me! Demi Lovato tries to go ‘edgy’

16 Oct

A lot of celebs are fortunate enough to have stylists that make sure they’re always well dressed. Unfortunately, celebs also have too many yes-men – people who are afraid to tell them they’re making a bad decision.

Between stylist and yes-men sometimes Hollywood’s finest step out in looks that stun us. Other times they step out in looks that just scream, “Honey, Help Me!”

Somebody get Demi Lovato a mentor.

Demi Lovato goes edgy at a press conference in Mexico City

I understand, The X Factor judge has been through a lot in her short life but there’s no reason to look like what you’ve been through – not like this at least! Maybe as a Disney kid she missed the opportunity to experiment by coloring her hair weird colors and throwing together “edgy” looks but doesn’t she know the rest of us wish we never went through that phase? Get it together.

Everything about this look screams “I don’t want to be here,” from the sloppiness of each piece, to the snug jacket which looks like it was borrowed and the “Are we done yet?” forced smirk on her face.

Demi was onto something by wearing all black to give her green hair more life but she went about it all wrong. First of all shredded skinnies or graphic tee – pick ONE! If she chose the graphic tee then she should know she doesn’t need ALL THOSE long chains. As for the combat boots – couldn’t she feminize this look a bit with a sexier shoe like a red pump, or if she insists on being “comfy” a cute flat?

Demi has seemed happier lately, so I’m not sure where this random lack of concern for her looks came from, but I hope it’s just a red carpet mistake and not the beginning of a lifestyle change for the young singer.

What do you think of this look? What would you change about it?

Primetime Emmy’s 2013: Best and Worst Dressed

23 Sep

This year’s Primetime Emmy’s were pretty lackluster, and the red carpet looks were generally no different. There were a few trends that repeated themselves over and over – blues and berries, emeralds and greens, nude nails, and general minimalism.

Despite the generally underwhelming looks there were a few worth noticing. Check out some of the best and worst dressed from last night’s red carpet below.

Christina Hendricks in Christian Siriano

Christina Hendricks in Christian Siriano

Christina Hendricks is always hit-or-miss, and for the second year in a row she seems to have gotten it together for the Primetime Emmys! The all black Christian Siriano gown is slimming and the lace sleeves are a nice solution to the never-ending support problem the Mad Men actress seems to have. Both the basic black dress and her signature naturally red hair are complemented by her jade earrings, ring and tiny clutch. Well done Christina, well done!

Mindy Kaling in Georges Chakra

Mindy Kaling in Georges Chakra

When it comes to hiding your trouble spots, Mindy Kaling seems to know a thing or two. Not only does her deep berry Georges Chakra gown work well against her skin, an updo helps show off the intricately embellished neckline. Between the neckline, slimming dark color, and length of the sleeve no one can notice any imperfections on her arms. As well as you did for yourself Mindy, please pass these tips on to Lena Dunham.

Lena Dunham in Prada

Lena Dunham in Prada

Remember that time in elementary school you convinced your mother to let you dress yourself? That’s must be what happened to Lena Dunham last night. The Girls actress donned a Prada spaghetti strap dress, not sure this can be called a “gown” covered in large flowers that didn’t work well with her arm tattoo. To add insult to injury, Dunham decided her eyeshadow should match her dress. No Lena, just, no.

Zosia Mamet in Honor

Zosia Mamet in Honor

Who told Lena Dunham to give Zosia Mamet fashion advice? She definitely gets points for trying – while everyone else was safe with bland dressing choices, she opted for an Honor gown with personality – but she really doesn’t have what it takes to pull this look off. Add to that the ‘messy up-do’ and reverse french mani which clashed with the dress, and this look is a full-on disaster.

Allison Williams in Ralph Lauren

Allison Williams in Ralph Lauren

Though her Girls co-stars couldn’t seem to get it together Allison Williams went with an on-trend cobalt blue gown by Ralph Lauren that flattered her well. Allison chose to keep it simple with two gold bracelets and soft waves in her hair.  This look is entirely understated and simple, which works, but couldn’t she have tried a bit harder for the Emmys? It’s a good thing her Roger Vivier black and gold pumps are hiding under that dress because as pretty as they are, they weren’t the right choice for this look.

Zooey Deschanel in J. Mendel

Zooey Deschanel in J. Mendel

Zooey Deschanel really seems to be finally growing up and learning how to dress for her age and her looks! It seems The New Girl star is continuing to grow out of her signature “quirky cute” look and is opting for more sophisticated ensembles. In a clean pale blue/greyish  J. Mendel gown and simple curls added to the ends of her hair Zooey Deschanel looks stunning. A tiny silver box clutch adds just the right amount of bling. Keep it up Zooey!

Carrie Underwood, Jewels by Jonathan Art

Carrie Underwood, Jewels by Jonathan Art

It’s hard to decide if Carrie Underwood‘s Romona Keveza purple gown is a hit or a miss but one thing is for sure – the lady NEVER gets it wrong with her jewelry! In a Jonathan Art necklace and side swept curls whether her dress works may be up for debate but there’s no denying she accessorized it properly!

Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Monique L'Huillier

Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Monique L’Huillier

Lead Actress in a Comedy Series Winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus went the understated route as well, but this look really worked for her. Julia’s champagne-hued Monique L’Huillier gown is the perfect shade to pop against her skin tone without being too loud. Her simple cascading waves look equally elegant.

Sarah Silverman in Stop Staring

Sarah Silverman in Stop Staring

Funny girl Sarah Silverman usually has us so busy laughing we don’t notice her looks but that changed last night! Sarah looked stunning in a Deadly Dames black dress and black platform pumps.  She stuck to the understated theme with a black clutch and silver bracelet, but added a touch of fun with a pink lip. The best part about her dress? Sarah told Ryan Seacrest that she got it online for $60! Way to prove you don’t have to spend a fortune to look like a million bucks!

Tina Fey in Narciso Rodriguez

Tina Fey in Narciso Rodriguez

Tina Fey is another funny lady who shocked us with sex appeal last night. Fey, who took home an award for writing,  chose a cobalt blue Narciso Rodriguez gown with a halter top cut to show the right amount of cleavage. The mermaid bottom accuentated Fey’s curves just right and her hair screams ‘effortlessly chic’. Understated worked for Tina Fey!

Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang

Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang

Speaking of showing off ‘the girls’, Sofia Vergara never seems to disappoint on the red carpet and this year was no different. Vergara, whose sitcom Modern Family took home the coveted ‘Outstanding Comedy Series’ award,  stuck to a Vera Wang number in her signature mermaid look cut just right to show off her “Golden Globes”. Vergara worked the jade trend with rings and earrings in the popular hue.
