Primetime Emmy’s 2013: Best and Worst Dressed

23 Sep

This year’s Primetime Emmy’s were pretty lackluster, and the red carpet looks were generally no different. There were a few trends that repeated themselves over and over – blues and berries, emeralds and greens, nude nails, and general minimalism.

Despite the generally underwhelming looks there were a few worth noticing. Check out some of the best and worst dressed from last night’s red carpet below.

Christina Hendricks in Christian Siriano

Christina Hendricks is always hit-or-miss, and for the second year in a row she seems to have gotten it together for the Primetime Emmys! The all black Christian Siriano gown is slimming and the lace sleeves are a nice solution to the never-ending support problem the Mad Men actress seems to have. Both the basic black dress and her signature naturally red hair are complemented by her jade earrings, ring and tiny clutch. Well done Christina, well done!

Mindy Kaling in Georges Chakra

Mindy Kaling in Georges Chakra

When it comes to hiding your trouble spots, Mindy Kaling seems to know a thing or two. Not only does her deep berry Georges Chakra gown work well against her skin, an updo helps show off the intricately embellished neckline. Between the neckline, slimming dark color, and length of the sleeve no one can notice any imperfections on her arms. As well as you did for yourself Mindy, please pass these tips on to Lena Dunham.

Lena Dunham in Prada

Lena Dunham in Prada

Remember that time in elementary school you convinced your mother to let you dress yourself? That’s must be what happened to Lena Dunham last night. The Girls actress donned a Prada spaghetti strap dress, not sure this can be called a “gown” covered in large flowers that didn’t work well with her arm tattoo. To add insult to injury, Dunham decided her eyeshadow should match her dress. No Lena, just, no.

Zosia Mamet in Honor

Zosia Mamet in Honor

Who told Lena Dunham to give Zosia Mamet fashion advice? She definitely gets points for trying – while everyone else was safe with bland dressing choices, she opted for an Honor gown with personality – but she really doesn’t have what it takes to pull this look off. Add to that the ‘messy up-do’ and reverse french mani which clashed with the dress, and this look is a full-on disaster.

Allison Williams in Ralph Lauren

Though her Girls co-stars couldn’t seem to get it together Allison Williams went with an on-trend cobalt blue gown by Ralph Lauren that flattered her well. Allison chose to keep it simple with two gold bracelets and soft waves in her hair.  This look is entirely understated and simple, which works, but couldn’t she have tried a bit harder for the Emmys? It’s a good thing her Roger Vivier black and gold pumps are hiding under that dress because as pretty as they are, they weren’t the right choice for this look.

Zooey Deschanel in J. Mendel

Zooey Deschanel really seems to be finally growing up and learning how to dress for her age and her looks! It seems The New Girl star is continuing to grow out of her signature “quirky cute” look and is opting for more sophisticated ensembles. In a clean pale blue/greyish  J. Mendel gown and simple curls added to the ends of her hair Zooey Deschanel looks stunning. A tiny silver box clutch adds just the right amount of bling. Keep it up Zooey!

Carrie Underwood, Jewels by Jonathan Art

It’s hard to decide if Carrie Underwood‘s Romona Keveza purple gown is a hit or a miss but one thing is for sure – the lady NEVER gets it wrong with her jewelry! In a Jonathan Art necklace and side swept curls whether her dress works may be up for debate but there’s no denying she accessorized it properly!

Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Monique L'Huillier

Lead Actress in a Comedy Series Winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus went the understated route as well, but this look really worked for her. Julia’s champagne-hued Monique L’Huillier gown is the perfect shade to pop against her skin tone without being too loud. Her simple cascading waves look equally elegant.

Sarah Silverman in Stop Staring

Sarah Silverman in Stop Staring

Funny girl Sarah Silverman usually has us so busy laughing we don’t notice her looks but that changed last night! Sarah looked stunning in a Deadly Dames black dress and black platform pumps.  She stuck to the understated theme with a black clutch and silver bracelet, but added a touch of fun with a pink lip. The best part about her dress? Sarah told Ryan Seacrest that she got it online for $60! Way to prove you don’t have to spend a fortune to look like a million bucks!

Tina Fey in Narciso Rodriguez

Tina Fey in Narciso Rodriguez

Tina Fey is another funny lady who shocked us with sex appeal last night. Fey, who took home an award for writing,  chose a cobalt blue Narciso Rodriguez gown with a halter top cut to show the right amount of cleavage. The mermaid bottom accuentated Fey’s curves just right and her hair screams ‘effortlessly chic’. Understated worked for Tina Fey!

Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang

Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang

Speaking of showing off ‘the girls’, Sofia Vergara never seems to disappoint on the red carpet and this year was no different. Vergara, whose sitcom Modern Family took home the coveted ‘Outstanding Comedy Series’ award,  stuck to a Vera Wang number in her signature mermaid look cut just right to show off her “Golden Globes”. Vergara worked the jade trend with rings and earrings in the popular hue.

Honey Help Me! Christina Hendricks at Ginger and Rosa premiere

13 Nov

A lot of celebs are fortunate enough to have stylists that make sure they’re always well dressed. Unfortunately, celebs also have too many yes-men – people who are afraid to tell them they’re making a bad decision.

Between stylist and yes-men sometimes Hollywood’s finest step out in looks that stun us. Other times they step out in looks that just scream, “Honey, Help Me!”

Last week Mad Men star Christina Hendricks made  appearances at two California screenings for her newest film Ginger and Rosa, but was her style a hit or miss?

Christina Hendricks in Tommy Hilfiger

Christina Hendricks stepped out to the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills  for a screening of her new film Ginger and Rosa wearing a totally on trend oxblood belted Tommy Hilfiger dress and attached cape. Her accessory of choice? Black heeled boots. Christina usually misses the mark, failing to work with her shapely body, and this turtleneck is no exception. Everything else about the dress fits her perfectly, except the high neck. Could she have made it a scoop or square-neck instead? The cape doesn’t seem to do anything positive for her either.

To add insult to injury she pairs the dress with dumpy boots. A nice pointy toe black heel would have exposed a bit of skin and may have countered the unflattering top, but the slouch in these boots covers her up even more and just makes her look dumpy. Better luck in Hollywood?

Christina Hendricks in L’Wren Scott

Christina tried again at another screening of her film, this time at Grauman’s Chinese theater show in Hollywood. She’s definitely stepped her game up in this slimming yet sparkling black L’Wren Scott cap-sleeve sheath dress and peep toe Jimmy Choo heels. While showing a bit of cleavage with the squareneck is a good idea, she would’ve been better off if the top of this dress gave her bosoms a little more breathing room. They seem suffocated just sitting on top like that.

The lesson here? When you’re working with a lot of goods too much material will make you look sloppy, too little a bit slutty. Aim for a delicate balance that properly skims the body.

Best & Worst Dressed: Primetime Emmy’s 2012

24 Sep

Last night ABC presented the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards. Television’s finest gathered in LA to honor the best actors, supporting actors, and hosts in our favorite dramas, comedies, varieties, and reality shows. This creative girl not only noticed who worked hard for recognition,  but who was working the red carpet as well.

There were a few trends most of the ladies seemed to be following: For hair it was all about carefree updos, or long flowing waves. On dresses we saw a lot of sweetheart tops and mermaid bottoms.

So which stars actually did these trends justice? See below for my picks of the best and worst dressed of this year’s Emmy’s.

Hayden Panattiere

This young actress has been impressing me with her acting skills since she played a football loving youngster in Disney’s Remember the Titans but last night was the first time she truly impressed me with her style skills. Panattiere wowed in a metallic blue Marchesa gown. I LOVE the golden underlay and her ‘Oh, this? I just threw it up real quick’ bun only helps bring more attention to this gorgeous gown. Work it girl!

Sofia Vergara

Can this lady do any wrong? Voted TV’s sexiest woman, Modern Family‘s Sofia Vergara seems to always be conscious of shapes and colors that flatter her figure and skintone – last night was no exception. This sparkly green Zuhair Muhad design worked great with her tan skin and the halter with minor keyhole detail draws attention to her cleavage without over overdoing it.

Julie Bowen

Perhaps Ms. Vergara should be teaching her Modern Family stepdaughter a thing or too about dressing to flatter yourself. Yellow seems to be the new “it” color and many of the ladies were doing it justice last night – Julie Bowen however, was not one of them. Her yellow is way too bright, especially for her pale skin and blonde locks. Can someone explain the frizzy hair? Better luck next time!

Christina Hendricks

Mad Men‘s voluptuous vixen always seems to be hit or miss. She’s either conscious of how to work her curves or making herself look dumpy. Between the cream color, sweetheart cut and belted waist, last night’s Christian Siriano frock was more of the former! To be a complete hit she should’ve had the dress tailored to be less bulky and better complement her frame. The perfectly coifed hair and proper balance of eye makeup with lip color help distract from the bulkiness of the dress and make her look a bit better.

Kat Dennings

I thought poorly covering up her massive tatas was just a part of her character as “Max” on 2 Broke Girls, but last night showed it may just be part of Kat Dennings personal style. She’s working the color but the sweetheart top on this J. Mendel gown gives her absolutely NO support. This look would have been PERFECT if she just found a better way to tuck the girls away.

Zooey Deschanel

I know that being “quirky cute”is her thing but award shows are not the place for that – and I’m glad that the New Girl star found a new support team to help teach her that. Although I’d personally alter the bottom of this ice blue Reem Acra dress a bit this is probably the best I’ve seen Zooey Deschanel. The hair and makeup is STUNNING, the color surprisingly works wonders for her and the sweetheart top complements her bosoms well. Keep it up Zooey!

Edie Falco

Nurse Jackie nailed it with this Stella McCartney dress. Colorblocking the navy blue with a nude color on top and white at the bottom sides is simple yet sleek and the gold belt is the perfect accessory for this minimalist look. Although going for a simple ponytail and red nails seems safe, their simplicity avoids distracting from the dress. Love it!
