Navy as a neutral with Phillip Lim x Target

6 Nov

Navy is definitely a neutral and people tend to forget that! Though this Phillip Lim x Target skirt wasn’t in as high demand as the Boom sweatshirt or animal print skirt, it’s a solid investment and this week I’ll  show you how to rock this understated essential with one of this season’s hottest trends.

Living_Fiesta- Phillip-Lim-for-Target-Navy-Skirt-2Though you can pair a neutral with almost anything, I like the way this navy skirt looks with Fall 2013’s camel and black trend. Okay, my “camel” is a bit melanin-deficient but it works nonetheless. Since the skirt comes with a black waistband and my top also has black piping all together the two make a natural, seamless look.

Since the outfit itself stuck to the basics, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to rock a bold red lip – and of course I used my new lipstick from Urban Decay.

Best thing I bought this month: Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick

“Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick.”
― Gwyneth Paltrow

Ever since my new obsession with lipstick started I’ve been determined to find a red that works just for me.  Sure, Marc Jacobs gave me a great plum color but I still needed that classic red lip!

About three weeks ago I wandered into Sephora and aggressively started trying out lipsticks. I tried Sephora red – cute, but not for me. I also tested a few from NARS and a couple other brands but it wasn’t until I got to the Urban Decay section that I found my hue – Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in F-bomb.

It’s almost like the shade was calling me. When I tried on the others I had to stop, think about it, look at the one next to it, examine my look in the mirror. Tilt to the left, then right. Take selfies and look again all before deciding they wouldn’t work.  When I walked up to the Urban Decay display F-bomb just jumped out at me. I tried it on and immediately fell in love. Just to make sure I wasn’t delusional I walked up to someone else and before I could open my mouth to ask what she thought she said, “OMG, that red looks GREAT on you!”

I managed to walk out with the last one they had – talk about luck! Their Revolution lipsticks retail for $22 but since I had a $10 gift card I only had to pay the balance of $12 plus tax. Score!

So now I have my trendy plum shade, and a classic red. I should be all set as far as lipstick goes – for now at least ;).

Honey Help Me! Christina Hendricks at Ginger and Rosa premiere

13 Nov

A lot of celebs are fortunate enough to have stylists that make sure they’re always well dressed. Unfortunately, celebs also have too many yes-men – people who are afraid to tell them they’re making a bad decision.

Between stylist and yes-men sometimes Hollywood’s finest step out in looks that stun us. Other times they step out in looks that just scream, “Honey, Help Me!”

Last week Mad Men star Christina Hendricks made  appearances at two California screenings for her newest film Ginger and Rosa, but was her style a hit or miss?

Christina Hendricks in Tommy Hilfiger

Christina Hendricks stepped out to the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills  for a screening of her new film Ginger and Rosa wearing a totally on trend oxblood belted Tommy Hilfiger dress and attached cape. Her accessory of choice? Black heeled boots. Christina usually misses the mark, failing to work with her shapely body, and this turtleneck is no exception. Everything else about the dress fits her perfectly, except the high neck. Could she have made it a scoop or square-neck instead? The cape doesn’t seem to do anything positive for her either.

To add insult to injury she pairs the dress with dumpy boots. A nice pointy toe black heel would have exposed a bit of skin and may have countered the unflattering top, but the slouch in these boots covers her up even more and just makes her look dumpy. Better luck in Hollywood?

Christina Hendricks in L’Wren Scott

Christina tried again at another screening of her film, this time at Grauman’s Chinese theater show in Hollywood. She’s definitely stepped her game up in this slimming yet sparkling black L’Wren Scott cap-sleeve sheath dress and peep toe Jimmy Choo heels. While showing a bit of cleavage with the squareneck is a good idea, she would’ve been better off if the top of this dress gave her bosoms a little more breathing room. They seem suffocated just sitting on top like that.

The lesson here? When you’re working with a lot of goods too much material will make you look sloppy, too little a bit slutty. Aim for a delicate balance that properly skims the body.
