Navy as a neutral with Phillip Lim x Target

6 Nov

Navy is definitely a neutral and people tend to forget that! Though this Phillip Lim x Target skirt wasn’t in as high demand as the Boom sweatshirt or animal print skirt, it’s a solid investment and this week I’ll  show you how to rock this understated essential with one of this season’s hottest trends.

Living_Fiesta- Phillip-Lim-for-Target-Navy-Skirt-2Though you can pair a neutral with almost anything, I like the way this navy skirt looks with Fall 2013’s camel and black trend. Okay, my “camel” is a bit melanin-deficient but it works nonetheless. Since the skirt comes with a black waistband and my top also has black piping all together the two make a natural, seamless look.

Living_Fiesta- Phillip-Lim-for-Target-Navy-Skirt-3To avoid overcomplicating the look with too many colors I added my nude shoes that almost match the top. I love this look because it’s super simple but at the same time super chic.

Since the outfit itself stuck to the basics, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to rock a bold red lip – and of course I used my new lipstick from Urban Decay.

Sporty Chic with the Phillip Lim x Target “Boom” sweatshirt

30 Oct

Phillip Lim x Target‘s “Boom” sweater was one of the most popular pieces in this collection. I went back several times after September 15 looking for returned items – don’t judge me – and besides the bags, this was the ONLY piece I couldn’t find!

Since it was so popular, I KNOW we’re all out here looking for innovative ways to wear it. I personally favor the sporty chic trend.

This season, sporty is going glam, whether it’s baseball caps with stilettos, skirts with kicks or feminizing your sweatshirt. I’m clearly a fan of the latter.

IMG_2677Living_Fiesta-PhillipLimxTarget-Boom-sweatshirt-SportyChic-4Take your “Boom” sweatshirt and add a black flippy skirt. Those blue pumps you wore with the animal print skirt? They work here too!!! Since the graphics in the sweatshirt are primarily red and yellow bringing in that last primary color complements the look well.

Corporate Challenge: Wear your Philip Lim x Target skirt at work

Animal Print Skirt Phillip Lim x Target

Animal Print Skirt, $29.99
Phillip Lim x Target

Last month we all clamored to get our hands on the coveted cheap-chic line 3.1 Phillip Lim x Target, and I’m surprised at how many people don’t know what to do with these pieces. Are you looking for outfit ideas for your new fashion finds?

No problem! Over the next few Wednesdays, I’ll show you how to wear some of your favorite 3.1 Phillip Lim x Target pieces in cute, somewhat unexpected, ways – you ready?

Let’s start with the popular animal print skirt. Despite what you may think you can TOTALLY wear this piece to work – yes even in a corporate setting!

This one is simple – Take a crisp, clean white button down and add blue pointy-toed pumps. Boom! Done! In a corporate office the button down shows you’re still about business, and the blue shoes – though fun – help you avoid adding too much color since they match the skirt.  If your office environment is more casual feel free to wear a t-shirt and add a chunky gold chain for even more fun.

1 piece, 3 looks: H&M yellow pencil skirt

19 Sep

I have this rule about buying clothing. Actually, I have several rules before I decide to buy (or keep) a piece -but one of the most important questions I ask before a new article enters my wardrobe is “How many ways, or places, can I wear this?”

The rule is I need to be able to wear it three different ways, or to three different places (i.e. to work, to dinner, and date night) or the item doesn’t belong in my wardrobe. Here’s how I style my yellow H&M pencil skirt three different ways:

IMG_2429 - Version 2Since yellow is a bright summery color, I paired it with another bright summer color – a pale blue top (also from H&M) with a pearl-embellished Peter Pan collar. Nude Arturo Chiang shoes help me avoid looking like a box of highlighters with too many brights.

IMG_2464As the weather gets just a little bit chillier, I transition the skirt from a summer staple to fall ready with an Express  rolled sleeve dark blue top. My oxblood Marc Fisher shoes, which are still in for fall 2013, bring out the burgundy piping from my shirt.

IMG_2404Another cool weather option is to pair it with a long sleeve top, in deep brown – a hue that works every fall. I brought out those nude shoes again to keep the look feeling like autumn. This time instead of pearls around my collarbone, I put a pearl wrap bracelet around my arm.

Of course these are just three of the MANY ways I can wear this skirt. What do you think of the first three looks so far?

Beauty must-do: Plum pouts

18 Sep

glossy-lips1

While you’re updating your closet for this season’s hot new looks, don’t forget to refresh your makeup drawer!

Now that temperatures are falling it’s time to put away the bright red lip in favor of a warmer hue.  This season it’s all about the deep berry lips – not as bright as true red nor subtle as a nude, a Bordeaux colored lip is a great vampy accent to an otherwise simple beauty routine.

Can’t tell which color looks best? Go for a browner base if your skin is darker, a more plum-based if your skin is on the fairer side. Feel free to experiment with several different hues to see which works best for you.

Will you be trying the plum pout this season?
